  • Essential oils are the life force of the plants. They are extracted from many different parts of the plant such as flowers, leaves, bark, resins, woods, berries, cones and the rinds of citrus fruits.Each oil has many therapeutic properties. They can be used in many ways including, baths, vapourisers, lotions and creams. When mixed with carrier oils they can be used for massage as this enhances the effects of the oils.

Aromatherapy is an excellent way of maintaining good health, using the oils at home daily, will help to prevent disease within the body also increases mental alertness. At the same time it can calm the mind from the everyday stresses of life.


  • Carrier Oils: These are un-perfumed vegetable/fruit seed oils that are cold pressed and used as the medium for which the essential oils are mixed to create your blend for massage.
  • Grape-seed Oil: is very commonly used as it is inexpensive to buy and is a light and easily absorbed .
  • Sweet Almond Oil: this is extracted from the almond kernel and is slightly lighter than grapeseed oil and contains vitamin A and a small amount of vitamin D.
  • Peach kernel:  This is extracted from the kernel it is easily absorbed and very light therefore very good for the face. It can be blended with either grapeseed or almond oil to enrich the blend. It also contains vitamin A and E.
  • Jojoba: This is extracted from the bean of the plant and is in fact a liquid wax used as an oil. It is very light and has almost the same ph as the skins own sebum so it absorbs very well . It is very good for the face, and is added to many face creams and hair products.

How Oils Are Used.

  • Massage: To use pure essential oils for massage they need to be diluted into a blend. A blend is a mixture of aromatherapy oils and carrier oils. The general rule of thumb is a total of 5 drops of essential oil to 10ml of carrier oil.
  • Bathing: Essential oils can be used in the bath, it is best not to put them in neat as the oil can float on the top  of the water and skin can be sensitive to the neat oil. It is better to dilute the oils in a small amount of milk or Jojoba oil. Use no more than 8 drops of essential oils. Add the oils once the bath has been run this avoids them evaporating to quickly . Swirl the milk and oils around in the bath water before getting in.This helps to disperse the oils.
  • Diffusion: To diffuse essential oils into the air. The best way is to use 4 to 6 drops of essential oils in a vaporiser/burner with water. You can also put a bowl of hot water with essential oils in near a radiator or soak a cloth in the mix of oils and water and put the actual cloth on the radiator.
  • Inhalation: Put no more than 5 drops in a bowl of hot water.Cover your head and the bowl with a towel and inhale  a few minutes at a time building up to 10 minutes

Oils such as eucalyptus, pine and peppermint are useful for inhalation.

If you want to use oils for skin care oils use flower oils such as Rose Geranium, Neroli and Jasmine.

  • Bergamot

Aroma: A Gentle fresh citrus fragrance. It is uplifting calming and balancing the emotions helps sleeplessness, very good for oily skin.

Ways to use: massage, diffusion and bathing.

Precaution Not to use before going out in the sun.

  • Black Pepper

Aroma: Spicy and warming

Good for muscular and rheumatic aches and pains, a warming oil that also increases circulation. Strengthens the nerves and the mind. Aids sluggish digestion.

Ways to use: Massage, bath and diffusion.

Precaution: not to use if you have high blood pressure or pregnant

  • Cedarwood

Aroma: sweet woody smoky scent

Good for respiratory problems and muscle and joints, good for oily hair and skin care. Clears the mind when clogged with anxiety. Helps cystitis and urinary problems.

Ways to use: Massage, bath and diffusion

Precaution: Not to be used when pregnant

  • Chamomile (Maroc)

Aroma: A rich warm fruity smell almost like over ripe apples

Good for calming nerves it is a good pain reliever,very good for muscular or arthritic pain as it is an anti inflammatory  soothing for skin problems too as it is anti-allergenic also antiseptic. It helps with sleeplessness.

  • Clary Sage

Aroma: Slightly sweet floral, musky scent.

It is good for lowering blood pressure, also nervous and stress related disorders, a deep sedative calming oil, muscle relaxant and pain reliever. It is an anti inflammatory.

Ways to use: Bath, massage and diffusion

Precaution: Do not use if you will be consuming alcohol it can exaggerate drunkenness. Not to be used if pregnant or if you have epilepsy

  • Cypress

Aroma: Woody, slightly sweet smokey spicy scent.

Good for respiratory problems as it is antispasmodic and it helps asthma and coughs. It helps varicose veins and menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes irritability. It has deodorising properties, calms emotions and helps sluggish minds.

Ways to use: Bath,diffusion, massage

  • Eucalyptus

Aroma: Crisp refreshing penetrating camphor type scent.

Good for reducing body temperature from fever, it is a decongestant, helps sinusitis as it has antiviral properties. Good for muscular aches and pains. Clears the head of mental exhaustion and aids concentration.

Ways to use: Inhalation ,bath, diffusion, massage.

Precaution: Lowers blood sugar levels so caution if you are diabetic.

  • Frankincense

Aroma: Warm, sweet spicy woody aroma.

Good for rejuvenating the skin, also for healing wounds and scars. A deeply relaxing oil and is good for use in meditation as it helps calm the mind also reduces tension. It lifts your spirits. Relaxes muscles and joints. Very good for respiratory problems such as asthma as it slows the breath and calms.

Ways to use: Bath, massage, diffusion

  • Geranium

Aroma: Sweet floral rose like scent

Good for balancing hormones therefore is good for menopausal problems. Also for balancing the sebum in skin so it is good for either oily or dry skin complaints. A calming and refreshing oil and a balancer of moods.

Ways to use: Massage, bath, diffusion and Inhalation.

Precaution: Do not use if pregnant.

  • Ginger

Aroma: Warming spicy fragrance.

Good for muscular aches and pains, rheumatism and poor circulation. Warms the joints. Great for respiratory problems, colds and flu. Aids the digestive system especially helpful for nausea and morning sickness in pregnancy.

Ways to use:Massage, Bath and diffusion

Precaution: Not to be used when there is excessive heat and inflamation. Use in low concentration as it could cause irritation on sensitive skin.

  • Grapefruit

Aroma: Fresh Zesty and uplifting

Good for water retention because it is a detoxifying oil. Balances emotions, it is uplifting and very good for depression.

Ways to use: Massage, bath and diffusion.

Precaution: Not to use when going out in the sun. Important: If you are on medication then you should consult your GP before using. 

  • Jasmine

Aroma: Rich heady floral soothing fragrance.

Good for depression and stress related problems, muscular spasm and pain. Helps rejuevenate skin. It improves elasticity and soothes dry sensitive skin.

Ways to use: Massage,bath and diffusion.

  • Juniper

Aroma: alpine type aroma

Good for: Colic, cystitis, water retention, arthritic and joint problems. It is a detoxifying oil. Strengthens the mind, helps with sleep problems.

Ways to use: Massage, Bath, inhalation and diffusion.

Precaution: Not suitable if you are pregnant or if you suffer with high blood pressure.

  •  Lavender

Aroma: Fresh clean, sweet floral scent.

Good for many ailments and one of the only oils you can use straight on the skin. It is especially good for healing scars, burns and stretch marks as it is a brilliant skin healer. It also helps with skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It balances emotions and has a calming effect therefore it is good for all nervous disorders. It is an anti-inflammatory and good for muscular aches and pains also eases joint pains.

Ways to use: Massage, bath, inhalation and diffusion.

  • Lemon

Aroma: Zingy, fresh uplifting scent

Good for the digestive tract especially the stomach and liver. It also helps to eliminate toxins. Helps with circulation problems and lowers high blood pressure. Also helps with respiratory problems. It stimulates the body into action helping you to clear your mind.

Ways to use: Bath, Inhalation,diffusion and massage

Precaution: Not to use before going out in the Sun.

  • Lemongrass

Aroma: Strong sweet grassy citrus scent

Good for digestive disorders, aches and pains, muscle tone, deodorant, mental fatigue and helps cleanse the mind.

Ways to use:Massage,bath,inhalation and diffusion.

  • Mandarin

Aroma:Gentle sweet fruity fragrance

Good for stretch marks, aids digestion and calms intestines. Also helps strengthen emotions.

  •  Marjoram

Aroma:Warm woody camphorous scent

Good for muscular aches and sprains, arthritis, asthma and bronchitis. Relieves headaches and sleeplessness. Helps digestive problems such as colic and heartburn and relieves intestinal spasms. A comforting and warming oil.

Precaution: Do not use if pregnant.

  • Neroli

Aroma :Sweet beautiful floral scent

Good for anxiety,calms nerves, Helps all skin problems especially scarring  and stretch marks.It calms the digestive system and eases colic.

  • Orange (sweet)

Aroma : Fresh fruity scent

Good For circulation, depression, uplifting and cheering the emotions. It is a blood cholesterol reducer.

Ways to use: Massage, bath, diffusion.

Precaution: Do not use when going out in the sun.

  • Patchouli

Aroma: Musky, earthy exotic scent

Good for dry cracked skin, strengthens nerves helps with anxiety problems. It also helps with fungal skin infections.

Uses: Massage, bath, diffusion.


  • Peppermint

Aroma: grassy minty camphor odour.

Good for nearly all digestive disorders,colds, sinus congestion, skin irritations and headaches.

Uses: Massage, baths, inhalation and diffusion.

  • Rose

Aroma: A sweet rich floral scent.

Good for soothing nerves, promotes sleep, increases circulation. Helps with anemia  Very good for mature dry or sensitive skin. A very sensual oil, brings comfort and peace.

  • Rosemary

Aroma: Fresh herby menthol smell with woody undertones.

Good for muscular aches and pains. A warming oil helps with respiratory problems, colds and flu. Improves circulation and highers low blood pressure.clears the mind of confusion and acts as a nerve tonic.

Uses: Bath, Inhalation, massage, diffusion. It is also good for putting in water when rinsing your hair for extra shine.

Precautions:Not recommended for pregnancy, high blood pressure or heart conditions.

  • Rosewood

Aroma: Gentle floral woody fragrance

Good for the nervous system very soothing and calming also uplifts the spirits. A good skin tonic for mature skin.

Uses: Bath, massage and diffusion.

  • Sandalwood

Aroma: Exotic, sensuous woody fragrance.

Good for respiratory conditions and dry coughs, urinary infections. It also strengthens the immune system. Eases anxiety and depression. Stills the mind therefore is good for meditation.

  • Tea Tree

Aroma: Fresh, woody camphorous scent.

Good for fungal and viral infections also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Very good for colds, sore throats and flu also cystitis and urinary infections. Helps clear the mind from confusion.

This is one of the oils that can be used straight on the skin for sores open wounds, spots, cuts and stings.


  • Thyme

Aroma: Clean strong herbal scent.

Good for circulation it raises low blood pressure, aids a sluggish digestion, helps bladder infections. the fragrance cheers the heart, promotes courage. Also very good for respiratory infections and a good insect repellent.

Uses:Bath Massage and inhalation

Precaution:Not to be used when pregnant or when suffering from highblood pressure. Also to be used in lower concentration as it can cause skin irritation on sensitive skins.

  • Ylang Ylang

Aroma: Exotic sweet floral fragrance.

Good for stress related problems a deeply relaxing oil. Creates a feeling of peace. Valuable for reducing high blood pressure. Balances oily skins especially good for the face.
